Make Money With Adsense. One Website or Many Listen to this article. Powered by Odiogo.com

Adsense is a favorite topic of mine and when I visit the forums I tend to gravitate towards the adsense subforums.

A recurring question in adsense forums is 'Which is better, make one big site and monetize with adsense or make several niche sites?'

And it's a valid question.
The answer however depends on who is asking the question

So if you are a newbie to making money with adsense and you asked the question 'One website or many?' the answer would be start with one website. And I have a few reasons for this

Learning curve. Have you noticed in the forums there are a lot of people making next to nothing with adsense? These people are not particularly dull or lazy. They are just evidence that it takes some work and know how to start making a significant income with adsense. Yes, there is a learning curve with adsense. problem is as newbies we throw all these sites up, slap some adsense code on the website and then hope for the money to roll in. but if you are making anything more than a couple of dollars a day with adsense, you will know it takes more than this. So to the newbie i say build one niche website, put content on it, get traffic to it, learn the skills it takes to make money from adsense with the website before making more sites.

Content generation. The newbie is often not in a position to pay a large amount of money for unique content to put on your website. So that means you have to generate your content yourself. And believe me, content generation is hard work and time consuming. This naturally limits how much content you can generate a day. So I advice focusing all that creativity on one website and get that to profitability instead of spreading yourself too thin across lots of websites

Getting traffic. Not the easiest task in the world. Getting traffic, significant amounts of traffic to a website that will result in a respectable income from adsense, is no mean task. Gone are the days when you just had to build the website and they came. Now you have to build backlinks, do some social networking, perhaps joint ventures, and then there are press releases. Loads of activities involved in getting traffic to this one site. So as the newbie, again focussing your efforts on your one adsense site makes more sense than building a ton of sites

I read a forum post by someone aiming to make 300 adsense monetized blogs. Hmmm. The premise is that each site can make about a dollar a day and ... lets just stop there a second. A dollar a day with a blog that you have put minimal effort into getting traffic to... not likely

For the seasoned internet marketer who has a the money to invest, the answer to the question 'one website or many websites to make money with adsense' is many websites.

Because of the power of outsourcing. The wonderful thing about making money with adsense on your website is virtually every aspect of the process can be outsourced.

And if you have been marketing online for a while, then you can probably afford to pay for high quality content and SEO

Adsense Tips CSS And Adsense Earnings Listen to this article. Powered by Odiogo.com

I never thought changing the way I build my websites could affect the adsense ads displayed on my websites.

Let me explain.

I have a website that the adsense ads are not targeted to the content on the page. I had done everything I could think of e.g optimize keyword density, ensured adequate content on the pages i.e. at least 300 word.

And still none targeted adsense ads.

I even put up some pages with the keywprd in different positions in the page name and still nothing.

The site is in a niche that attracts a lot of adwords advertisers so I knew there was a lot of ads in the keyword pool

So I thought I would change from monetizing with adsense to using a different program e.g. adbrite or info links. Which was a difficult decision for me because I have had some success with adsense on a large proportion of my other sites.

Before changing the advertiser, I decided to revamp the site. Convert from standard HTML to CSS.

My followers on Twitter will be aware of the period when I was making this change because like all nerds, I tweeted my progress.

I kept the content as is but used external style sheets to format my pages layout

You could have blown me over with a feather when I noticed the sites adsense revenue going up. Hmm and yes I forgot to change monetization... and am I glad I did.

What gives?

Reviewing the pages showed the adsense ads were targeted to my content.

Same content, same page names, just external style sheets resulting in targeted adsense ads and better CTR.

Watch some CSS Tutorial Videos Below

Your Adsense Earnings Does Not Need to Be Peanuts Listen to this article. Powered by Odiogo.com

Adsense is a favorite of mine, because it is such an easy business model and Google does all the work for you.

Let me take a moment to tell you what prompted this post

I read and watch every adsense tutorial I come across. Simply because adsense is one of the main methods I use to monetize some of my sites. It's therefore important to keep abreast of new deveopments in adsense.

I was reading an e book that said something like 'With adsense you should be making a minimum of $5 a MONTH by the end of the first year'

WHAT!!!

One year for $60 dollars. In some countries there are laws against such low income.
Even $5 a day would mean £150 a month which again is just peanuts if you have been slogging hard at it for a whole year

If you are in that bracket you need to settle down and read this post

If you have a website up for more than one year and your main source of income from the site is adsense, you really should be making more than $5 a day

If you are not, you are doing something wrong. The question is what are the possibilities.

We'll deal with the obvious ones first

Insufficient traffic

Like I said it's pretty basic. You need traffic to make money with adsense. People need to be visiting your website if they are going to click on your ads. If you think about it, the CTR a lot of webmasters declare in the forums is 2 to 5%. So if you are getting a hundred visitors a day... that's 2 adsense clicks. An average keyword optimized page could attract adsense ads that pay you 50 cents a click. Let's be generous and say $2 a click. $4 a day from your 2 clicks is not going to take you on the road to quitting the day job. Nuff said on amount of Traffic

Insufficient Content

This could be an insufficient number of pages or an insufficient amount of content on each page. Lets talk about the number of pages aspect of things. You'll never come across someone who is 'caning it' with a two page website or blog. You need lots of pages that are optimized for a lot of different keywords. That's a lot of pages on each of your websites. Think about it. The guy who set up the article directory is privy to this concept. You create the content for him/her and he monetizes it with adsense. All those pages with all that content focused on that wide variety of keywords. There is a lesson in there for those with their eyes open

And the content on each page. Agreed there are those who seem to be able to manipulate the adsense code and manage to get adsense to display relevant ads on low content sites. But for the majority of us, we need to present the adsense code with content that tells it what ads to display on our pages. It is within this content that your keywords appear often telling the code what your page is about. Personally, I had some pages that really did not do well. The adsense ads were not relevant. I wrote more content on some of these sites and ... relevant ads.

Ignoring Search Engine Optimization

The best traffic for adsense income is search engine traffic. This is one fact that has not changed for a few years now. Conversions are better when your visitors come looking for you and your content. It's basic stuff. People will tell you that social bookmarking and other things are great for adsense. I say in my experience not. Social networking traffic is pretty good for affiliate sales. But when it comes to adsense, it has got to be search engine traffic. So pay attention to your SEO. If you do not have an SEO approach to creating content for your sites and blogs, start now.

Less Obvious Reasons for Low Adsense Income

Wrong type of traffic

Getting traffic is easy. Just stick your site on a traffic exchange site and surf all day.
You'll get hits, loads of hits. Each will stay on your site for the obligatory 10 seconds and off they go to another site.
This sort of traffic will earn you next to nothing with your adsense monetized sites.

As I mentioned earlier, you need people who come to you looking for the content on your pages. And because you have made the effort on the content front to ensure that your adsense ads are relevant, your visitors will be interested in those also. Not to overstate things, search engine traffic best fulfills this. Optimize your pages for keywords that are relevant to your content and you will get the right type of traffic... the type that converts

Click Exchange

We have all come across them on forums and on blog networking sites. They send you private messages on the blogcatalog and facebook asking you to click their adsense ads and they will click yours in return.

The logic behind these peoples' thinking is just beyond me. Risk losing your adsense income for life [A Google ban usually is for life] for a single click from someone that is never going to come back to your site!!! Does that sound like a bad idea to you or is it just me?.
You want to invest the time in building your content, your backlinks, improving your on page SEO. These are the things that translate to long term earnings on your site

Believing The Gurus

This one was my big mistake when I first got involved with making money online with adsense and with affiliate marketing. Blindly following what that cool ebook taught you is not the way to go. All the guy is telling you is what worked on HIS SITES!!

It does not necessarily mean that they will work on yours.

With adsense you have got to TEST things.

There is no perfect position or banner size or colour scheme that is perfect for all sites or even across different pages on the same site. You have got to do some testing.

The gurus are there to give you a guide, an introduction to adsense and help you lay the foundations. The rest is up to you.

Before I finish this I realize that it sounds like a lot of hard work is involved with making money with adsense.

But if you look at things objectively, it takes a lot of work in the bricks and mortar world to make an income....So why are we expecting short cuts when it comes to making money with adsense?

Adsense Only For Website Monetization Listen to this article. Powered by Odiogo.com

Can adsense be the sole method of making an income from your website?

I wish the answer was a simple yes or no but it is more complicated than that

Most of you who are into making money online are not looking to be the next millionaire. Just a regular reliable source of income that frees you from the chains of a JOB

So the question about adsense is a valid one

Say you aim to make $3000 a month. Can you achieve this level of income consistently with adsense

And more crucially, can you rely on this income

To the first part of the qquestion, it is possible to make a significant income with adsense. Without resorting to black hat methods or spamming or click fraud

But this takes a lot of time and effort and won't happen overnight

To achieve this you will need

Webpages

A lot of webpages. Each optimized for a different traffic pulling keyword. and each with a decent amount of content on the page. The five page website on Acne for example is just not going to do. You need hundreds of pages and each page should be keyword targeted so that you get ads that are relevant to your content

Visitors [Traffic]

We are talking about truckloads of traffic. Thousands everyday. Oh and to make things a little more tricky, it's search engine traffic you are really after

So if you think that you can command a decent amount of traffic and build lots of keyword targeted pages, then you can make a significant income from adsense alone

The second question 'Can you rely on your adsense income for a living?' Now that's a little more tricky

Variation

The first problem is your income will vary from on month to the next. So you can get yourself into the position where you get the coveted adsense check every month. But some months will be great and others.... well just making the $100 pay out trigger. SO as your sole source of income, may not be a good idea

Adsense Ban

This is dreaded by all webmasters who monetize their sites with adsense. Especially if you are making a decent monthly income with it. The theory is if you stay within the terms of service of adsense and remain strictly white hat, then you have no worries. But we have all seeen those posts in the forums about sudden adsense ban where the webmaster just cannot figure out why

So to round things up, I certainly am an adsense enthusiast but I would advice that you have other forms of monetization on your pages or at least in mind

Adsense Can Be So Unpredictable Listen to this article. Powered by Odiogo.com

Regarding adsense and niche websites, the majority of us niche marketers know the basics

You add content that is keyword rich and niche focused.

Get the keywords on your pages right, put them in those oh-so crucial spots in your content and you'll get ads relevant to your content

But sometimes this can be so unpredictable.

While browsing today I came across a blog on niche marketing. The content was not great but it was okay as niche marketing blogs go. You could tell it was a newbie blog with rehashed content but we won't hold this against him or her

Anyway the website name was business something or the other. But all the google ads displayed were on the keyword 'bus'
Ouch!

Why am I telling you this? Because a closer look at the pages shows where he went wrong

Adsense really can be unpredictable when you blindly follow what people tell you without testing things out for yourself.

Keyword stuffing and trying to tell the code what ads to display on your pages is all well and good [actually it's not and doesn't work]. But if you right naturally on the topic you wish to communicate to your readers, the relevant keywords will appear naturally in your content and the adsense code will have no difficulty displaying ads that are relevant to your content

And having said that I'll probably get adsense ads on this post that are totally out of sync with the words on this page

Never mind, the lesson is still valid :)

My Big Adsense Awakening Listen to this article. Powered by Odiogo.com

Adsense and making a significant income online are a pipe dream. At least that's what I thought when I first started on this internet marketing or niche marketing business path

Like a lot of my niche marketing colleagues, it was a good adsense day when I made $2 in that day

'WOW'
Not really the fast track to financial freedom :(

And like a lot of people out there still seem to believe, if what we read in the forums is anywhere near the truth, I thought the people who make a significant income with adsense must belong to some secret club where they share the real secrets about making money with adsense

And you may snigger but the concept of adsense secrets has been used as a marketing gimmick [successful] by many a marketer

I knew I didn't have a chance of getting into any inner circle of adsense insiders, if they did exist

So I focussed on what I know and urge you if you are reading this to do the same

I focussed on content and traffic. I really knuckled down and worked hard on my sites.

Be it search engine optimization, social networking, forum participation... I was there.

I worked hard.... very hard

And you know I slowly noticed an increase in my adsense revenue.

At first it was sporadic good days, and then things evolved into sporadic bad days. I hope you can tell the difference

And so I had my huge adsense awakening. The information you need to make a success of this is all there. The tools you need to make adsense work for you, most of you probably already have

All you need to do is focus on your content, learn how to generate traffic for the long term. Work hard and adsense will pay you

Make Money With Adsense - Adsense Position Listen to this article. Powered by Odiogo.com

The position of your adsense units could significantly affect your click through rate.

I honestly thought this was Adsense 101, you know the basic basics of Adsense.

So why is it that when browsing the net you come across web pages with the Adsense at the end of the page?

Lets quickly run through how to determine the best position for Adsense on your website or blog

For this I am assuming that Adsense is the main source of income from the web property you are optimizing.

General adsense position rules
  • Adsense Block above the fold of the page

This one is really basic. You want to put the adsense units above the fold of the page to maximize the chances of any website visitor seeing your adsense ads.

Make it the first thing they see on your page.

If you have just content above the fold of the page, a visitor could quickly look at the content and decide to go to another site. No adsense click for you.

If you have adsense ads above the fold of the page, there is the possibility one of the ads titles could be what he is looking for. A click, kaching!!

  • Adsense in page hot spot

Studies have shown that there are certain areas on a web page that attracts the eyes. these are areas that we instinctively look at. The hot spots of the page.

You want to include an adsense block in this area. Most of your web page's visitors will look at this spot meaning most of your web page visitors will see the adsense blocks displayed there, increasing the chances of them finding something of interest in the block. And clicking on it

  • Adsense within body of content.

A really useful tip if used properly. We know that having an adsense block withing the top part of your content increases the click through rate, but this has to be done with some style.

You will see hundreds and thousands of web pages with the 300 by 250 block as the opening of the first paragraph. But the problem is they look like adsense ads camouflaged in content.

And no-one likes being tricked into clicking on an ad. You'll find that the regular Internet user has developed blindness to these ad blocks.

So I put adsense high in the body of my content, but I make the adsense blocks stand out. No tricks, no camouflaging. Just an adsense block breaking up the content

To Sum it all up, your adsense block needs to be displayed above the fold of the page, in the hot spot of your page and preferably with the body of your content

Before you run out and start pasting adsense all over your websites, a word of caution.

YOU ONLY NEED ONE OR AT THE MOST TWO ADSENSE BLOCKS PER PAGE TO MAKE THIS WORK

Hey?

You read this right. There are web pages out there with adsense pasted all over each page leaving the content, which is why the visitor came in the first place, difficult to decipher. Doesn't work.

I'll go into details of how many adsense units you should work with in another post

Before we finish, you must understand that each web page is unique. Above are GENERAL adsense position tips. But what will work on your web site or blog may be different.

You MUST TEST EVERYTHING.

Apply the tips above and see if there is an improvement in your click through rate for the next 100 visitors you get to your blog or website.

If there is no improvement , change the position and run things for another 100 visitors. For some pages it may be the link units that perform better so test those.

Till next time

Display Adsense Below Blogger Post Title Listen to this article. Powered by Odiogo.com

Displaying your AdSense ads directly under the title of your blog posts, if you use the blogger platform, could increase the exposure of your AdSense ads.

The fact that AdSense ads placed in the hot spots on a web page get the greatest exposure to visitors should not be new to you.

So how can you display your AdSense ads just under the title of your blog post?

  • AdSense Code
Log in to your AdSense account and generate the HTML code for the AdSense format you want to display under your blog post title

  • Encode AdSense Code.
If you paste the AdSense code directly into the HTML code of you blogger template, you will get an error message and your AdSense ads will not display properly

Why? Because blogger is in XML and the XML code needs the HTML code characters like <, > and & to be converted to entities for the code to be interpreted.

To convert your AdSense HTML code to a format that will display properly on Blogger you need to use an HTML encoder. There are several available to use online, just perform a search engine query

  • Log in to your blogger account

  • In the dashboard click on the 'layout' tab

  • Once the layout has loaded, click on the 'Edit HTML' tab in the navigation

  • Back up your current template.

This is very important. You are about to edit the template of your blog and if you make a significant mistake you want your blog template available to reload
  • Click on the 'Expand Widget Templates' radio button and look for the following code

  • Paste your encoded AdSense code just beneath the code displayed above

  • You can preview your results before saving the new template

  • It really is that easy

Google Adsense Policy A Closer Look Listen to this article. Powered by Odiogo.com

AdSense being one of the main sources of monetization for my websites is something that I pay great attention to.

Taking a close look at the AdSense policy I came across this apparently innocuous statement

I hope you can read the text that I have circled in black ink.

This section of the policy is with regards to encourage clicks.

For all the years I have been using and learning about AdSense, I must have bought at least 50 ebooks or training videos on how to get the best out of your AdSense campaigns

And they all advice the same thing

'Blend your ads'

'Make you ads appear to be part of your content'

Being one that likes to test things out, I tried all sorts of different formats and sizes for my AdSense ads on my main sites.

And found that blending just did not work for me.

My click through rate was higher with ads that stood out. Different colours and what have you. So as a result I have tended, on most of my Internet properties, not to follow the 'blend your ads' mantra

But reading the AdSense policy in detail again, I am glad I haven't

For those who cannot read the screen capture the policy says

In order to ensure a good experience for users and advertisers, publishers participating in the AdSense program may not:

  • Format ads so that they become indistinguishable from other content on that page.
  • Format site content so that it is difficult to distinguish it from ads.

I don't know about you but it does make me sit up and take notice.

The long and short of it is read the policy carefully and avoid getting banned

Make Money With Adsense Traffic Quality Listen to this article. Powered by Odiogo.com

Make money with AdSense traffic question was written to give you an idea of the magnitude of the task ahead.

It was really just number crunching to give you an idea of the amount of traffic you will need to get to your AdSense sites to make some money

Here we are going to talk about a more important factor with regards to AdSense traffic and that's Quality of traffic

I know you must have seen the adverts that offer you 10,000 visitors to your site for $15. I get them all the time in my spam box. The thing to do with these emails is to delete them. Bought traffic does not work with AdSense.

So what type of traffic works with AdSense. By works I mean will give you a decent click through rate on the AdSense ads displayed on your pages
  • Search engine traffic. It has got to be number one. Search engine traffic has been shown, time and time again, to be the best converting traffic for AdSense sites

It really is why you need to apply some search engine optimization when writing posts for your blogs

And when you go after search engine traffic, you must make sure that your blog ranks for keywords that are relevant to your ads. No point in getting a ton of search engine traffic about SEO when the page really draws social media ads. The way to avoid this is to optimize each post for a SMALL number of related keywords and make sure that your backlinks reflect this. [Think of the 'click here' and Adobe example]
  • Targeted Traffic. You want to draw people that are interested in the topic your post is about. No point in drawing retired folk to a student loan post. Your target traffic sources must be relevant to your websites content.

Can you see why buying 10,000 hits for $15 is a waste of money now?

About The Google Adsense Ban Listen to this article. Powered by Odiogo.com

Google AdSense ban is a real issue for those if us that monetize our websites using google AdSense.

So lets just take a few minutes out to discuss methods of avoiding the dreaded AdSense ban

First and foremost, Google has a guide that tells you the Dos and Don'ts so please read it. AdSense guide from the lips of Google

  • Click Fraud. This conjures up images of someone sitting in a darkened room clicking on their own AdSense ads. A really dumb thing to do. First, this WILL get you banned. And second, it's not going to make you rich. Duh?.
But click fraud also applies to a host of other things e.g asking visitors to your web page to click on the ads, getting friends and family to click on your ads, click exchanges. If you are reading this and thinking, I am doing this and not yet banned, don't worry, you soon will be

  • Code Manipulation. With AdSense, you are allowed to change the text color, banner size, even the font of the ad while creating your code. Any further editing of the code that is outside the scope provided in your AdSense account can get you banned.
  • Multiple AdSense accounts. This is a real no-no with Google AdSense. It really is a one account per person policy here. Yes you may have heard some big shot marketer telling of his multiple AdSense accounts, doesn't make it right. Also the big shot marketer is making money from all sorts of avenues and really is not relying on AdSense to put food on the table. Also, you are not a big shot marketer!!
  • Other contextual ads. Now this one is often a genuine error on peoples part. But AdSense does not want you displaying your AdSense ads on the same pages as you display other contextual advertisers ads. So if you are monetizing your site by displaying AdSense ads, you cannot display yahoo search marketing ads on the same pages. It is one of those things that is not obvious, I suppose this is why we need to read the TOS of AdSense

These are just a few basics. You may be wondering why I have written this post.

I was chatting to a friend about what I do online and the AdSense thing came up. As soon as I explained AdSense to him, he said, I'll build my site and click on my ads for an hour a day everyday

Yikes!!

Doesn't quite work that way

Higher Adsense Click Value Listen to this article. Powered by Odiogo.com

Highest paying AdSense keyword is a reasonable target for a lot of Internet marketers. Or is it?

Later I will add a list of the current highest payout AdSense keywords I could find

And you may wonder why share such a lucrative resource

Simple.

Because I don't use it!

I know it seems sensible to build information sites based on these high paying AdSense keywords in a bid to increase your revenue from AdSense.

For example, a website based on a keyword like 'Chicago personal injury lawyer' could garner $40 or more for a single AdSense click, if the list is to be believed

Wow! $40.

Let's be more conservative and say $20. With that kind of site all you need is 5 clicks a day to make a reasonable income.

Problem is the competition to get high SERPs position for this keyword phrase is bound to be steep.

And we all know you need visitors to get clicks.

Let's take an average made for AdSense website with a click through rate of 5%. [This is a little generous. Most webmasters report a click through rate of 1 to 2% but we will use 5% for our little illustration]. This means to make your 5 clicks a day, you need 100 unique visitors to your site a day.

Now in itself, this is not a big ask

But fire up your google keyword suggestion tool, it shows that the month of March yielded a grand total of 140 for that keyword phrase.

And you can be certain that some of those will be webmasters like you and I doing keyword research

Not looking so favorable after all

So maybe going after these high payout AdSense keywords is not the best way forward for the average niche marketer

The compromise is to find a keyword that garners maybe a dollar a click but gets a ton of searches.

That makes for better return on investment of time spent in generating the website and optimizing it for the search engines

Well at least that's my experience

The list?

Not mine. I got it from a forum I participate in. The forum is http://www.tareeinternet.com/forum/

Till next time

Adsense Requires Work, Loads Of Work Listen to this article. Powered by Odiogo.com

I was browsing the forums a few days ago and had noted that my adense earnings were particularly low. So when I came across an adsense post, actually there is an abundance of adsense posts in the forums , but this one caught my eye.

The post ran along the lines of adsense doesn't work and is not worth doing.

I duly replied, cause you just feel compelled to when one of your major sources of income is being bad mouthed; and said something along the lines of

'Having a slow day today and have only had 100 adsense clicks but adsense does work'

Not sure how to interpret the response I got. Couldn't be sure of it was disbelief or sarcasm. Either way it was negative. The possibility of getting a hundred clicks on a slow day seems beyond the comprehension of this guy

And it got me thinking that in spite of all the experience and all the training material available on adsense [and some of it good, I might add] and even the wealth of free information on adsense, a large proportion of the make money online crowd going the adsense way are not making any money

A quick browse of the digital points forum adsense subforum has posts along the lines of

'Yeah, made $1.20 today'
A dollar and 20 cents!!!. Their time would be better spent doing manual labour for minimum wage.

I think the problem with adsense is a lot of us were led to believe that it is a quick and easy method of making money online

You know put up an info site of doubtful quality, slap some adsense code on it and .. Hey presto! Money by the bucket load

Problem is it doesn't quite work like that

Adsense takes work, a whole ton of work to get any decent returns from it

You know those thousand dollar per month checks?

Totally possible but you have just got to focus

Focus on quality content, Backlinks, networking, posting decent information, increasing site size, increasing site reach. Focus, Focus, Focus

I do this part time and now spend about 4 to 5 hours a day on my different projects.

So before anyone else complains about the lack of earnings from adsense, the question to ask yourself is 'have you given yourself a fair chance?'
